Dictionary lesson plans: Teaching on teaching tools with links to dictionaries

Dictionaries are a homeschoolers best friend. Since Noah Webster published the first American dictionary in 1806, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, to the modern day Merriam Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary students have built vocabularies using these tools. It’s important that children understand the best way to use a dictionary and that educators ensure children develop life-long skills to ensure learning success.

One of the most popular dictionaries in use today is the Merriam Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary that is available in part online through the official Merriam-Webster site. It is important to note that the Merriam-Webster is a derivative of the original Noah Webster dictionary of 1806. Merriam-Webster continually adds new words to the dictionary on an annual basis.

Here are some resources for those teaching about the dictionary.
